A win for Carlsbad

In response to “Top-two system creates some suspense” (June 6): Farrah Douglas did not let us down in Carlsbad. No matter what the outcome was in the [76th Assembly District] primary election we could only win. We still have her as our city councilwoman!

It’s unfortunate that elections are often won through nasty politics and distorted sound bites, and candidates are aware of mud they wallow in. We admire Farrah because of her tenacity, integrity and always taking the high road. She ran a positive and professional campaign. Nowhere to go

I believe Mr. Frank Leech (Letters, June 10) hit a nail on its head in regards to S.D. streets. I live in Poway and can’t find a street in or out belonging to S.D. that isn’t made of potholes. I think a new name for S.D. should be RUTSville, USA. – Dave Greaney, Poway

Dialysis resources in danger of cuts

As a dialysis administrator in San Diego, I am responsible for the life-sustaining care of patients with kidney failure, also known as end-stage renal disease (ESRD). I – and the caregiver team here at DaVita College – had the opportunity recently to give Rep. Susan Davis, a tour of our facility and a firsthand look at the difference we are making in the lives of San Diego area residents rely on dialysis to survive.

We welcomed the opportunity to speak with her about quality dialysis care and the importance of preventing any further cuts to the Medicare ESRD benefit that enables us to provide lifesaving care to our patients.

My main concern is to provide the best care to my patients, but I simply cannot succeed without the resources needed to do so. I hope Rep. Davis will carefully consider these patients and all of the available options before enacting further cuts to the Medicare ESRD benefit. Our patients deserve nothing less.

Allow creek to flourish

We all experience loss in our lives. There is no escaping it. But the burden of loss we carry with us is like a compass. Look around you for what remains. Then you know which direction to take.

We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us – all of them gone now – those who paved the way for the lives we lead here in the beautiful city of Carlsbad through their successes and struggles. How do we thank them?

Experts say we are entering a new age of mass extinction. The paradise that sustains us all is slipping through our fingers ever more rapidly. Have we lost our way?

I do not want a legacy of extinction to be the one I pass on to my children and future generations. They need hope.
