Home hemodialysis The count down begins now.
Written by Francis QuinnHome hemodialysis The count down begins now.
My main objectives on this blog are to keep thing simple and give people the information they need first hand.
My Background.
I've been on dialysis twice in my 33 years once when i was 10 for 18 months which i was on at home on a home peritoneal dialysis machine which I used myself. After 18 years of a transplant i got IgA again and am now back on treatment again. This time I learnt how to use the Machine in Hospital and now want to bring hemodialysis home to my house. Which now also involves learning how to use the new hemodialysis machine and this is what the blog will be about along with the setting up of the room and who's involved personal wise

The House and Room
Initial home visit by Nurse & Baxter.
The initial visit is by the dialysis nurse and baxter the medical company who’ll convert the room and do the water treatment system for you they also supply the machine and most of the stock. During this visit they’ll take some water samples measure the room and plan what needs to be done. My room will need 2 days work while this work is been carried out I’ll keep you all updated. Seems like allot of work but it’s not really , just put in the water system, electric work and shower tray for the dialysis machine to sit on so some plumbing but again each room will be different.

Bins
Baxter have delivered all my bins there is one big outside bin and i was happy to see it was GREEN and just had a yellow lid. The other bins are inside bins and can be kept in the room until they are full and then placed in the larger outside bin.
1 Large green bin
4 small yellow bins
2 needle bins
1 roll of yellow bags.

Session 3 & 4
Session 3 was a very interesting one for me as one of my needles fell out otherwise knowing as a blowing needle. Now don't panic and that's what i did not do as cool as anything i was able to stop bleeding but luckily the nurse was there and she was able to help me do the recirculation. In the mean time i stopped bleeding and was able to re needle again and get on and get treatment again. You can tell someone all you want on what to do when something happens but when you get first hand experinces at it it's more helpful. But am hope it not happen to me again. However if it does i know what to do.
In session 3 & 4 I've been mainly doing what I've done since session 1 the more you practice on setting up the machine and priming it, entering in the data UF, pump speed, time that better you'll get at it. I also take myself off and remove my own needles one at a time. I have also learnt how to drain the machine and remove all the lines and put sharps in the sharps bin and recycling in recycling bin.
So its now 4 session and i would feel very confident in setting up the machine and priming it and also feel happy to handle the alarms i must stress that the alarms are not like the old gambro machines.

The Builders Day 1
The room requires a shower tray for the dialysis machine to sit on and as you can see the tray is neat and tidy. The size of the tray is roughly 4ft
by 3ft. I also required a sink in the room. The Dialysis RO Systems has been put in place you can see it down by the rad it not completed yet. Also the electric sockets on the wall.

Helping yourself before the traning Starts
Another useful part is taken yourself off the machine and taken out your own needles. Learn how to do your own wash back and remove you own needles one by one of course. Also learn how to handle on what to do if you clot and if you can't wash back..
A useful place to start getting to know the machine is this website the following links will help you with this.
http://www.kimal.co.uk/dialysis+equipment.htm
The link will help you get to know what you'll learn while in training with the nurse.
http://www.kimal.co.uk/download/Nikkiso-Training-Guide.pdf
This link is the full operating of the dialysis machine it was useful to me to flick through after the first few dialysis session you'll not have to read it all so just go to the bits you feel you need to learn more about. It may be worth printing it all out as a references but i did not as i ave it saved on my laptop.

I am off to Goa today!
I am really looking forward to the trip. At the same time I am a little apprehensive about the dialysis bit. I just got off a night session. I will not get any dialysis tonight. I will dialyse tomorrow (Saturday). That will be a four hour session and then I take a full two night break. This kind of a one-four-hour-session-in-four-nights thing is something I have not done in years now. I am hoping I spend enough time on the beach and in pools to not let it bother me.
I am also going to Goa with friends for the first time. I've been twice only with family. So, it is going to be a different experience.
I am most likely not going to be available by email or by phone so unless something earth-shattering happens like say if the state of Telangana is formed or if Sandeep Gudibanda responds to an email, please don't bother me!
